Introspective soundscapes from Balearic wizard Afterlife

The seasoned producer on point with forthcoming ‘Burning Man EP’

Afterlife

Steve ‘Afterlife’ Miller has been steadily delivering blissed-out Balearic gold since the ‘90s. His immaculate sounds have appeared on labels and compilations including Defected, Hed Kandi, and the legendary Cafe Del Mar series. He’s also curated a number of excellent compilations and has collaborated with the White Isle heroes Chris Coco and Pete Gooding.

Here he presents the ‘Burning Man EP’ — a lovingly crafted four-tracker inspired by the festival of the same name — which includes meditations on the environmental challenges facing humanity while attempting to touch all five senses with tones of emotion.

The collection is typically well constructed and expertly produced chill out material. From the beautiful ambient waves of ‘Konishi’ to the emotive layers of ‘Jupiter Rising’, the entire release is endowed with a deeply meditative quality.

Title track ‘Burning Man’ is our favourite here. The heads-down groove chugs along with a slightly dark and brooding quality, like a powerful storm approaching on the distant horizon. Hypnotic textures are delicately woven throughout and the music resonates with psychospiritual energy.

‘Dub Baby’ is perfect for sunsets, sunrise, and for staring out over oceans. Uplifting and breezy, the aptly named track revolves around a syncopated dub rhythm as pads, strings and quirky synth motifs interplay over a sub-heavy bass.
