Soundistan return with more hidden wonders from the Asian Underground
The BK collective continue to cast the net far and wide, showcasing lesser known and rising talent at their Safe Room Base.
We’ve covered Soundistan quite a bit here on the site because we admire their ethos. The organisers stick firmly to their manifesto - to highlight artists from across Asia who they believe deserve more of the limelight than they currently receive, along the way bringing a diverse mixture of musical styles and textures to the Bangkok night. On Saturday 16th November they host Tokyo based Romy Mats, Like Animals from the Philippines, and Thailand’s own Jirus.
Romy Mats hails from deep in the Tokyo underground and is a selector adept at pulling together sounds from bass to warm, dubby techno and house into his coherent mixes. He organizes "解体新書 (Kaitai-Shinsho)“, a platform responsible for introducing worlds of underground music to Japan, and always with a unique perspective. 'Kaitai Shinsho' has continued to develop in scale and depth, and is now a solid highlight of the Tokyo scene. Having moved from Saloon to WWWβ, and on to legendary club, Contact, whilst featuring artists ranging from Call Super to Pangea, and Peverelist. And now, fresh from sets for Rural festival and Boiler Room Tokyo, Romy is ready to drop his stylings in Bangkok.
Next on the bill, we have Like Animals. A sound artist and producer from Manila, Philippines, his work encompasses a wide range of genres from abstract house to electronica and all the way through the spectrum to lo-fi hip hop. Inspired by pagan mysticism and the magic of the human mind, he strives to produce music that taps into our primal instincts and communal need for sound. He's also one of the founders of BuwanBuwan Collective, an electronic artist community, production and record label focused on cultivating the Philippine electronic and beat scene.
Finally, we have Jirus from the forward-thinking MELA crew out of Bangkok. An emerging talent from the local scene, his sets are as versatile as they are dynamic and he’s known to be an expert reader of the dancefloor. The Soundistan crew tell us they’re super excited to have him on board.
Sounds to us like a tight line-up for fans of serious electronica, and as ever, it will be well worth checking out to see what pearls Soundistan have uncovered for instalment number 6.
