Double shot of Coffee In The Moring with Detroit Swindle and Prins Thomas
The Dutch duo are back on their Heist imprint with an impressive four-track EP
Deep house superstars Detroit Swindle follow up from last year's 'The Life Behind Things' to present something genuinely exciting on their forthcoming 'Coffee In The Morning' EP. Here they collaborate with The Jazz Diaries' Jitwam, who – fresh from his recent 'Honeycomb' album on Tartelet – provides his distinctively soulful vocals on two original tracks. On top of this, Norse-disco leviathan Prins Thomas is called upon to supply an epic Diskomiks of the title track.
Detroit Swindle have made a home for themselves in the pinnacle realms of the deep house pyramid with their always reliable production and on-point clubs sets. They’ve set the bar high for themselves, and here they show no signs of letting up. Opening track 'Coffee in The Morning' brims over with vibrant funk energy, thanks in no small part to a gigantic bassline which is laced with live touches from Xander Vrienten, and expert percussion from Mauskovic Dance Band's Chris Bruining. The music charges over powerful chord stabs which are reminiscent of Francine McGee's disco masterpiece 'Feeling Good'. Jitwam's slap-back delayed vocals are accompanied by a soaring sax line played by Amsterdam-based jazzer Finn Peters, and the track also appears in an instrumental version for those who like it dubby. It's a club bomb, make no mistake, and quite possibly has some cross-over appeal.
Also on the A-side, and again featuring Jitwam's vocals, is the '90s house-inspired 'Move Out The Way’. Slamming 909 rhythms and swung snares drive the cut over a solid bass and driving chord stabs. This is a fully authentic tribute that sees Detroit Swindle's tight sound fuse with raw elements of the likes of NYC house masters Mood 2 Swing.
Finally, and, for Cosmic Tiger, stealing the show, we have Prins Thomas' interpretation of 'Coffee In The Morning'. Thomas loosens up the groove a touch, straps on his bass guitar to play a b-line that sounds about twenty feet tall, and stretches the arrangement over ten magical minutes that evolves into a cosmic night flight. Gentle chords usher in the sax solo, the vocal is used only sparingly, and at the mid-point, a spaced-out synth arpeggio marks the music's blast off into an alternate reality. We absolutely love this.
This is a top-quality EP. In the words of Detroit Swindle's Maarten and Lars “Let’s hope we all get a chance to play the music out loud to more people than just your neighbours and your cat”.
