Qommon launches in BK with Roza Terenzi & Que Sakamoto
A new ‘super-group’ from the teams behind Soundistan, Music Makes Me High, and Final Frontier comes to life at Decommune on 18th January.
We’re all about collaboration with like-minded characters who love nothing more than to share their music and art with the world. So, when the Soundistan guys got in touch to tell us about their new project, we thought it was worthy of some attention.
Qommon was born out of a realisation. There are a number of high-quality events collectives operating out of Bangkok, with similar - yet subtly different - visions, remits and music policies. Sadly, though, the scene in the city probably doesn’t provide quite enough footfall to sustain all of these promoters if their events occur on the same dates.
The elegant solution that these forward-thinkers have devised is to combine, in the process flying-in carefully selected international guests to perform alongside their favourites from the local circuit.
For their launch event, they bring over figurehead of the red-hot Melbourne scene, Roza Terenzi, alongside Tokyo disco favourite, Que Sakamoto.
Roza Terenzi has been in serious demand in recent years thanks to her uniquely energetic djing and live shows. Following appearances in her native Australia at Inner Varnika, Meredith and Strawberry Fields, she’s subsequently been answering calls to play at some of the hottest joints on the planet and has toured extensively, checking in at Primavera, Dekmantel, Säule, Pickle Factory, De School, and Robert Johnson along the way. This exposure has heightened her production resolve, and her studio outings have found homes on Dekmantel and Kalahari Oyster Cult.
Que Sakamoto has carved out a name for himself in the disco world in recent years, thanks as much to releases on To Rack & Ruin's edit series as it is to his heavy touring of Asia, Europe and America. He’s performed sets on radio stations including Red Light in Amsterdam and Living Room in Zurich, and back home in Tokyo, he founded club night ‘Huit Etoiles’ at Vent in the super-hip Omote-Sando neighbourhood. His parties have featured luminaries from the world of nu-disco, including Late Nite Tough Guy, Crazy P, Psychemagik, DJ Rocca, Khidja and Mehmet Aslan.
It’s also worth exploring the very deliberate choice of venue for the event. The Qommon team have made supporting purpose-built club venues part of their mission statement, and for noble reasons.
‘In Bangkok, as far as the electronic music scene is concerned, the recent trend has been towards pop-up locations and events’ notes Soundistan’s Samir. ‘We have absolutely nothing against this, and it’s always a great time at many of these unique, beautiful locations with amazing artists. People wanted something fresh, and through quality line-ups and novel locations, the city’s promoters impressively provided that. We have a lot of respect for such achievements and in fact, are inspired by them'.
‘But there is also another side to this. We are now at a time where Bangkok’s underground venues are struggling. They are really struggling. And a few are always on the brink of closure’.
As such, the Qommon community plan, at least initially, to make use of some of the city’s iconic nightclubs as a show of much-needed support.
Also on the controls on the night will be co-creators Boogie G and Tristan Kino, alongside Elaheh and Jirus. Full info can be found by clicking on the flyer below.
