It’s always a pleasure to receive interesting music here at CTHQ. Recorded in Switzerland in 1986 and originally released on Speed Records, after a couple of listens of ‘Ce Ta Ou / Sud Africa Révolution’, we felt confident our esteemed vinyl collecting oracle Matt Stancombe would be interested in giving us his insight into this heavily sun-kissed 12”.

Sure enough, it’s a record he’s more than familiar with and, as ever, we we’re happy to share with you his thoughts on the release and the label.

When inexorably hip london fashion boutique LN-CC was designing its interiors to resemble futuristic film productions using proto-eco construction methods they had under their employ some visionary young upstarts like Dan Mitchell and Jonny Nash. As part of their brainchild they brought the fashion and music worlds together (again) in a natural symbiosis by both holding in-store events like the infamous mezcal circle and curating an inspiring and groundbreaking selection of essential and for-thoughtful records. One such record that grabbed my attention had an attention grabbing sleeve and a curious name that after reading the description made me think it wasn’t for me, I didn’t need another German drumming record.

The second time I noticed the record by Om Buschman was when skimming through the pages and looking at the pictures (I don’t read Japanese and google translate wasn’t then a thing), in Chee Shimizu’s crucial textbook “Obscure Sound”. Interest piqued and I looked up the release again to find that I should have picked it up for the now-with-hindsight bargain price offered at LN-CC. Records such as these have accelerated in profile over the years as tastes have changed and new frontiers arrived. Luckily the public are blessed with a myriad of reissue labels such this promising start-up, Glossy Mistakes, who provided an exciting premier release with Om Buschman Total.

Their second release is another record that floated into focus one summer while walking to the botanic gardens listening to a particularly dreamy Jamie Tiller mix on Soundcloud. It’s another release where I’d seen the cover (in the expensive section of some shops) and paid little attention but once I heard the song and figured out what it was, it clicked into place. ‘Femmes Pays Douce’ was the track and IS the track, an earworm that gently nags away at you eating into your brain, unnoticed until the breakdown, all bells and whistles percussion taking it up for the drop, perfectly executed. It’s gentle like a cod reggae song, but the synths you realise are deadly, and the vocals like a lullaby, yearning. Others mention the ‘Bizness A Bangkok’ track and ‘Dread Vibrations’, and to be fair the whole LP is more than ‘solid’, but the track I always play without fail is Femmes...

‘Ce Ta Ou / Sud Africa Révolution’ is due out on January 24th. You can pre-order the record via Glossy Mistakes’ Bandcamp page here.
