The latest project from Stefano Ritteri and Marco Salvatori, Spaziale Recordings is born with a mission statement that’s sure to pique the interest of all disco lovers, promising, as it does, to unearth rare and forgotten pearls from deep in the ocean of Afro, cosmic and Italo music.

They launch with an ultimate feel-good cut in the form of John Ozila’s ‘Funky Boogie’. Not exactly an anthem - it’s more of an esoteric secret weapon of seasoned selectors such as Horse Meat Disco and Dekmantel Soundsystem - but anthemic nonetheless.

The mid-tempo groove is driven by Ozila’s delicious phasing bass, subtle synth leads, arpeggios and space-age pads, enlivened by hazy horn stabs, and, of course, the fierce lead vocal. Fun and slightly camp, but held-down enough to avoid offending sensitive types, this is deeply infectious and sure to garner much-deserved attention from new audiences.

Alongside the lead track are two equally floor-filling grooves, with the uptempo disco-funk of ‘Let’s Go Boogie’ and the hypnotic space disco of ‘L’orange Bleu’. All three tracks are red hot, and all first appeared on Ozila’s 1979 album ‘Boogie Salsa’, released on French label Disques Vogue. Here the music is re-mastered and cut nice and loud to ensure maximum dance-floor efficiency.

We happen to know the Spaziale crew have much more in the pipeline (we’re already climbing the walls in anticipation of their third instalment), so we strongly suggest keeping your eyes and ears peeled for their output. Due out on 13th December, you can buy ‘Funky Boogie’ here

~ We just discovered that John Ozila passed away only a few days ago on December 5th. Our love goes out to his family and friends. Thank you for the music, John, May your spirit soar free ~
