Mytron in unstoppable form on forthcoming XXX011 release
San Soda joins the party in his cunning Nick Berlin disguise
We're big fans of Mytron and the distinctive psychedelic landscapes he creates with his music. Following on from his outstanding 'Blauw' release on Multi Culti with long-standing collaborator Ofofo, he's back on a solo mission for excellent Dutch label, XXX.
The impressive six-track EP was over a year in the making, with the carefully chosen tracks refined from an expansive set of demos Mytron had sent to the label. Eccentric dance hero San Soda was invited to contribute a remix, for which he morphed into his Nick Berlin alter-ego.
Opening track 'Navigator' sets proceedings off in somewhat maniacal fashion. Energetic arps, dramatic synth lines and screeching vocals make this a seriously energetic affair. Next up, Dreems joins the production on the brilliantly freaky 'Draai'. The bass hook rolls and modulates relentlessly under detuned synth drones, spoken word vocals and crisp drums. The mood mellows very slightly on the wonderfully kooky 'Allgegenwaertig', where Mytron exhibits his trademark ability to turn ostensibly ordinary vocal samples into potent musical textures – the warm bass, space-age synths and snappy drum hits enlivened by a curious German vocal.
On the flip, mystical top-lines, vocal chants and distorted bass add a sense of the exotic to the downtempo stylings of 'ABCD', while on 'Plaza' we find a rousing electropop tribute as optimistic synths glide over the energetic bass. San Soda's Nick Berlin remix of 'Plaza' toughens up the drums and adds layers of acid dirt to subtly usher the track further into new beat territory.
This is fabulous work from Mytron and an excellent release from the XXX crew, with six eminently playable dance tracks on a single slab of wax. While much of the world is still prevented from enjoying the benefits of communal dance, luckily for those of us riding out the storm in here in Bangkok, the clubs have reopened (for now at least). We'll be sure to make full use of these timeless tracks while we wait impatiently for the world to open up!
