Maverick interplanetary manoeuvres on 'Space Funk' from K Mo & Byron The Aquarius
UK-based producer and DJ K Mo returns to his very own Wayout label with a wonderfully creative deep house three-tracker on the 'Space Funk EP'.
James Kumo has released work alongside an impressive line-up of revered underground production minds, and since launching his K Mo project in 2020 has collaborated with the likes of Harri & Affi Toby Tobias, and yard One. Here, he joins forces with irrepressible keyboard virtuoso, Byron The Aquarius, who we've admired throughout his career – thanks to inspired solo work and exceptional collaborations with the likes of Kai Alce and Onra – where his jazz-infused flow has seen him release on Theo Parrish's untouchable Sound Signature among other fine imprints.
Though – or perhaps, because – the Cosmic Tiger deep house collection is extremely well populated, it isn't too often we hear a piece from the newer branches of the genus that elicits a strong response, but our ears instantly pricked up when this one rang from our speakers. The entire release is well-executed, with each track representing good value for introverted sonic explorations, from the organ-heavy and conga enlivened 'Moonlight Shuffle' to the heads-down bass flex and rousing chords of Inner Soul. The standout for us is the maverick interstellar joyride of title track 'Space Funk'. Here, we find Byron in wondrously free-flowing form, as his exquisitely limber synth work via his Prophet 6 weaves layers of intoxicating leads, hypnotic stabs and funk-tinged bass. The boldly psychedelic textures soar and evolve majestically over crisp beats, enlivened throughout the adventurous arrangement by Chris Bruining's spirited percussion lines.
Supremely high-quality deep house with more than enough free-spirited personality and funk-coated charm to see it stand out from the pack.
