Mixtape number 7: Wong Echo

Cosmic Tiger invited Bangkok-based Wong Echo to grace the turntables with his far-reaching sounds

Objectively speaking, there is a core of genuinely talented DJs populating the strangely dynamic Bangkok underground (of course, they’re outnumbered by a legion of less than talented ego-maniacs, but that’s the story the world over). Subjectively, though, Wong Echo is one of our absolute favourite locally-based selectors, and we’re very happy that — after some gentle reminders — he finally furnished us with a mix.

And what a joyride his mix turned out to be.

Incorporating some of our favourite music, some we’ve not heard for years, and some we’ve never heard, Wong Echo includes tracks from Paul Hardcastle, Kerri Chandler, Psychic Mirrors, Mim Suleiman and many others as he spans genres, as effortless as it is coherent.

Wong Echo (real name Cho Kaewayanurak) considers himself part of ‘the proto-movement of producers and DJs pushing for erratic yet cohesive genre-hopping’, and we can vouch for the accuracy of that statement. Part of a refreshing breed that has changed the game and, as far as we’re concerned, made dance music so much more interesting. Genre boundaries are dispensed with in favour of interesting musicality, curve-balls and happy surprises.

Wong Echo is one half of Slum DIsco Soundsystem and Jam on Toast. He’s also a very handsome and likeable fellow and can (we assume) bench-press his own bodyweight.

His new album ‘Purity’ is available on Bandcamp, check it here.
